NancybirdNancybird

Nancybird began back in 2001, with Emily Wrigth using some of the textile prints created in her fine art course to make a small collection of purses and bags. She brought them to a couple of local stores in Melbourne known for their support of Australian design, and nancybird was born.

The name “nancybird” comes from the work Emily was doing in her uni course- her main focus was the way AFL footballers looked when photographed while taking a mark- it looks almost like a ballet dance. The word “nancyboy” was bandied around for this uni work, but for the label nancybird was eventually settled on- it ended up being a mix of the nancyboy and “dollybird”, which is an old 60’s term for a cool lady.
